The semester began with a close analysis of Mies van der Rohe’s 860/880 Lake Shore Drive apartments in Chicago. The significance of this lesson was read in contrast with those taken from Mies’s Promontory Apartment Building in Chicago and the Seagram Building in New York. The focus of this investigation was on the relationship between skin and structure. 860/880 differed from the other two buildings in how its skin fell flush with the exterior face of the building’s perimeter columns.
